just thinking about law school

Here are some of our money saving tips while being in law school:

At Home
Do less laundry (Like, wear things more than once before washing them. It's not gross, it's green.)
Dry clothes on the line (depending on where you live)
Offer to take leftover laundry detergent from fancy people who've upgraded to HE machines
Try a "no spend month" (No eating out, no driving: no spending. For a month. We've done it. Twice.)
Shopping at Grocery Outlet has cut down on our grocery budget drastically
(they also have really great prices on shampoos, soaps, lotions etc.)
Stock up on lots of brown rice, whole wheat tortillas, & whole wheat pasta. Lots.
Crock pots can turn basically any ingredients into awesome meals (just throw it all in & done!)
Drink water. From the tap (again, green!)
Accept hand-me-downs when needed and make them work
Never buy new when you can buy thrift/Freecycle/Craigslist
See what programs you qualify for (After B was born, we qualified for WIC. Free breast pump! Woo hoo!)
We both wear glasses. We buy new ones online for insanely cheap rates
(Our insurance can't compete with this place).
Toph cuts his own hair & B's. My MIL cuts mine.
I stopped dying my hair (Ombre is in, right?)
We bought our car with cash from Craigslist (It better make it through law school!)

At School
Our school gives every student money for printing, there's no need for us to have a printer at home.
Toph buys all of his textbooks online (usually through Amazon)
He sells his books back on Bookbyte after each semester
There are always free lunches on campus from some event or other (Always!)
Check to see what Grants you qualify for (since having B, we qualify for ones we didn't know about until we looked into them)
When possible, get in-state tuition
Check to see if your school has good rates for on-campus housing (we live on-campus and LOVE it!)

At Play
For the past couple of birthdays we've been given Netflix subscriptions by our parents (such a great gift!)
Dollar movies/cheap local activities can be your best friend
Internet and t.v. are included in our rent
Swap babysitting with your friends who also have kids
Mini splurges every now and then will ward off big splurges (I suggest Pinkberry visits. Highly suggest.)
Enter free giveaways/free trial programs. Lots of them (Toph got a free laptop that way. SO COOL!).
Find yourself a free hobby (Hello, blogging!)
Even with all our scrimping and saving,
we're gonna be up to our earlobes in debt after three years of law school+taking the bar.
So why even bother?
Sometimes I wonder the same thing.

But we still plug along, hoping to do the best we can while still enjoying this phase in our lives.

We went to Utah & it was a blast. But now the apartment is a mess. Forever.

We pulled in last night after ten hours in the car and ten days in UT.
Currently B is lying on a pile of laundry/luggage zoning away to Oh Tootles!
I just got back from a crack of dawn dentist appointment and the apartment is messier than it's ever been. Ever. And I'm blogging.  Priorities priorities. So Utah was a blast and the blogger meetup/swap was way too fun. More deets to come! Probably. If I ever get this place shoveled out.

The dad in our house (which=Toph) turned 26 yesterday.
And today he's celebrating his second official father's day.
Holla!
Thanks for being the absolute best dad ever to our B, Toph.
He looks up to you like crazytown.
Someday he might grow up and have his own little mini me (with uber chubby cheeks) who adores him.
And he'll be good to that mini cuz you're so good to ours.
We love you! Old man! Holla! Again!

to the boys

With Toph's birthday/father's day coming up I've been thinking: B and Toph are my favorite boys. B's fave boy is definitely Toph. Since day one he's been a daddy's boy. Its really nice, I never have to worry about B wanting me when I leave him at home with dad. I hope B grows up to be a dad like Toph. I'd be cool with that. My number one wish for B is that he grows up to be righteous because I know that will lead to happiness and I want this kid to be beyond happy. He deserves it. Even if he is a little daddy worshiper.

Phone tales.

Life according to the droid:

-B got the cutest real live cowboy boots from Gma Jo for his birthday. WE LOVE THEM!
-BBQing on the "front porch"
-We've been hitting the pool as much as possible lately. I'm still not tan.
-Diaper time is all the time lately. But just for B.

second baseball game of his life!! not as great as the first one. :(

Last year, B just crawled around on the grass when we took him to a baseball game.
This year: no such luck.
He was running everywhere, triyng to sneak onto the field, throwing fits and stealing other peoples seats.
Our little trouble maker: we'll never take you in public again.
The end.

the cousins came to town!!

B finally gets what it means to have cousins and he loves playing with Helen's kids.
They came to town for the week and we had a blast hitting up the water park and the pool together. BUT: our apartment is way too tiny for more than 2 1/2 people.
Lesson learned. Wow.

June 9, 2011

oh the places we'll go

So it's been two weeks without the car and B and I are loving it (thank goodness)!
A pic I snapped of him today. We have lots of picnics!

If you ever see us walking around & wonder if it is in fact us, here are a few identifying characteristics:
>Stroller full of crap.
We visited a new freepile today (another score for O.P. Anika! & thanks Heidi!).
I had a mailbox, shoes, glass jars, & all my normal junk shoved in the stroller basket.
Awesome.
>Rosy cheeked boy being pushed by a woman who nonchalantly pours sippy cup water on herself.
It's finally warm (again) here!!  A girls gotta do something to keep cool.
>Rosy cheeked boy yelling out something sports related.
Seriously, B has like sports vernacular tourettes or something.
Out of the blue it's: "basketball HOOP!" SOCCER ball!" "KICK it!" "CATCH it!!"

Of course you could always just run up to us & swab our mouths, draw some blood, & take our fingerprints ...
It's us, we swear!

you be the judge!

video
When B goes to bed, the real fun begins.
But Toph wasn't that impressed by my "Fake Stair Walking" body powers ...
WHAT?
Is he not seeing what I'm seeing here??
Golly.

(I better throw a reminder in so that this post isn't a total crazytime waste.)
I've been super loving your 4th of July stories!
So many of them are connected to family, new babies, and overall good clean fun.
Reading them makes me all nostalgic and popsicle crave-y.
