the one where she goes on and on about hair

hairz thru the years + my parents got a Mac with photobooth when I was a teenager so ...

When I went to high school it was the era of big black boots, long brown hair and I made that my motto. I grew my hair out extra long, flipped it around all day, dyed it all the time, and trimmed off my split ends during science and math class (not weird, compulsive, or rude at all).

Community college came next (years 16-18) and I decided to be above it all (riiight) and hack it off (influenced I'm sure by Rory's big Yale cut, I'm never above the Gilmores) and donate it to Locks of Love. Off went 12 inches!! And with it, my identity. (Never dramatic, never ever.) I cut it to my shoulders but you would've thought I'd gone full Britney. Calculating how long it'd take to grow back. Sobbing into my pillow at night a la Jo March. It didn't help that a lot of people responded with, "You cut your hair?! But it was so pretty before!" but still.

Off I went to BYU. College was a time of avoiding real cuts while summoning all the dye (blonde in the summer, dark in the fall for yearsss). Toph met a highlighted blonde, dated a brunette, proposed to a black haired crazypants, and married an almost platinum blonde (all me, get it?).

A couple years later and pregnant with Bronson, I decided to be real mature and cut off a foot of hair again. I took in a picture of Gwyneth's blonde bob for reference (do hair dressers hate when you do that?) and really liked the outcome. A few months later I tried to go brunette + get the same cut but I screwed up the color and the hairdresser messed up the cut. As the pregnancy progressed, my face got chunkier and chunkier til I was this faded, short haired, brunette, Shrek look alike. I hated everything about myself and my hair was up there. I grew it back out and left the color alone.

As I was losing the pregnancy weight and beginning the feel more like myself, my hair started to fall out (post partum is the biggest joke on this planet) so I hit the hair dye bottle hard and found solace in highlights. A few years later, ombre became a legit thing so I cooled it on the highlights and started getting just the ends of my hair colored. Easy to maintain and I loved the look.

After a while I got pregnant again and decided to let my hair grow the whole pregnancy and leave the dye alone (they say making drastic hair changes while pregnant is a bad idea and by then I knew they were right). By the time Everly was born my hair was 25 inches long again (because everybody measures their hair ... ) and I was loving it! When I curled it, or washed it, or took it out of the knot I kept it in all the time ... so basically never. I crossed my fingers it wouldn't fall out again but my fingers are broken and it started to come out even worse than last time. Sad day. (And oh the split ends. Oy!)

I started looking through the hair section on Pinterest and was drawn to the shorter cuts every time, "She looks awesome! But I could never cut my hair that short." I'd reason. I started asking people how they got the guts to cut their hair. Why did it make me so nervous??

One day I was mulling it over with Bronson:
"I'm thinking about cutting a lot of my hair off, what do you think?"
"Don't do it mommy! Pretty girls have long hair!"

WUT?

"Bronson, Everly has short hair. Is she pretty?"
"Oh. Yes!"
"Grandma has short hair. Is she pretty?"
"Yes!"
"And you know what? Girls can be lots of things besides pretty."
"Like what?"
"They can be smart and funny and adventurous and courageous and nice and interesting and super and - "
"I think you should cut your hair, mommy."

So I set up the appointment, went in and .... wimped out. I'd planned to go 17-ish inches shorter but as the scissors neared my ponytail, I kinda freaked and went with a "safe" shoulder length bob (I cut off 13).

I absolutely loved it!! (Especially freshly styled!^) But was kinda bummed that I didn't go through with my original plan. I tried to live with the knowledge that I'd be that girl on ANTM who freaks out at makeover time and then made another appointment a month later.

Which brings us to today:

This is the shortest hair I've ever had (duh) and I've never felt more feminine! Hair's just hair but it really does have so much sway over how I feel about myself. I've always considered the ability to grow my hair really long, fairly quickly as this like, life skill or something. (I could maybe use more (real) life skills.)

We'll see how long I can keep it shorter (haircuts cost money and take time, what?!) but I'm really digging it and I kinda feel like I want to wear a bomber jacket and floral skirt daily. Or red lipstick and a head scarf, Rosie the Riveter style.
Have I mentioned I love it?? :)

PS: This post isn't a survey asking what style looks the best in anyone's opinion. It's mostly just the longest way ever to say, "I cut my hair! It makes me feel brave and awesome right now!!" Insert another smiley face.

This kid got jokes. Actually, he just got joke.

Bronson and I made this yesterday. ^ Disney's in talks to trademark it. I mean, I get it.

"How do you know when a train's eating?"

"I don't know Bronson, how?"

"You can hear it choo choo!!!!"

Rinse and repeat 900 times. Laugh every time.

Mini Trip: Tahoe City

Topher Tutt surprised me with an overnight trip to Tahoe for our 6th anniversary!! We thought about leaving both kids behind but a) then I would've had to pump before and during the trip and b) I kinda really wanted Bronson to see Lake Tahoe.  It turned out really fun and I'm glad we took them. Next year though: NO KIDS.

We stayed: in this little lodge/guest house. Toph used AirBnb and it was awesome! I cannot stress this enough. Wood floors, a full kitchen (that we never used because Jim Gaffigan's right, vacations are about the food), a loft bed, washer/dryer; loved it.

We ate: a lot. Hacienda Del Lago for a dinner (good but not the best Mexican food, duh), Rosie's Cafe for breakfast (so cute!),  Syd's Bagelry and Espresso for lunch (the smoothies were way overpriced but the sandwiches were delish), and Jiffy's Pizza that we ate on the beach for our last dinner there. (My favorite place! I was extra hungry and pizza on the beach is just good.)

We played: at the Tahoe City Library (a great place to feed Everly, play with new toys,  use some free wifi, & hang out til the weather got a little bit warmer at the beach) and Commons Beach! It was so gorgeous. We went kayaking, built a sandcastle, & I repeat read a book (Jean and Johnny by Beverly Cleary. I'm 12.) I'm ready to visit again.

Toph has been hearing me wax annoying about Tahoe since I went last August. I love it there! It was so sweet to be surprised and get to go back. Sitting in the lake on a kayak was just overwhelmingly perfect. I have the sunburn to prove it.

the state of the union- 6

These are the very first cell pics of me trying on my wedding dress!! (I just found them all the way back in my 2007 archives!) I carefully hid them from Topher so he wouldn't' know what my dress looked like.

First pic as The Tuttles!!! (Kinda. I didn't change my name for like a year ...)

Last year we went back and took a few pics in our wedding fancies for our anniversary.
(Ev was  there!!! 8 weeks along at that point.)

So six years.

I really like making lists so I asked Toph what the best thing from each year of our marriage has been (after he was all, "Like I can remember what happened when!") and he said:
1- You graduated
2- I graduated
3- Bronson was really fun
4- I had a great summer job
5- I graduated law school
6- Passing the bar, having Everly, getting a job (more than one! cheater)

And I said:
1- Working on the duplex
2- Finding out we were pregnantus!
3- Having Bronson!
4- Living in Davis/Law School
5- Watching Bronson grow and become more hilarious by the day
6- Everly!!

Marriage has peaks and valleys, but it feels like, as time goes on, the peaks come around more often and the valleys don't seem like such a big deal. We're still so far from perfect (and I'm not even gonna say that we're always perfect for each other. Sometimes I'm a total freak and perfect for NO ONE to be around) but things are good. We get better and better as the years go by. Just like denim trends. (That's the saying, right?)

Happy 6 years, Tizzoph! Thanks for all the inside jokes, TV show marathons, tech support, clean laundry (!!), and more than anything else; for Bronson and Everly!  I like our family. A lot. :)

the park

Proof that we braved the (non existent, this is CA) elements and went outside.
Proof that Bronson loves his sister (at least for a photo op).
Proof that I still lug my big camera around because it's so fun to use.

The park by us is pretty great. We hang out there a lot and it's a special treat when Topher comes along. Mostly because then he gets requested as swing pusher and my arms take a break.

End of list.

Day Trip: Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel

We took a day trip! To Monterey, CA! And Pacific Grove and Carmel. They're all real close to each other.

We ate: at First Awakenings. Pancakes as big as a dinner plate, breakfast burritos as big as Everly! My pancake was rocking raspberries, granola, and coconut. I ate it up. I loved it so.

We played: at Dennis the Menace Park and the beach. At the park, Bronson (and Topher) had a grood (no typo) time going down the slides, running through the maze, across the bridge, and to the mini rock wall. I had fun feeding Everly and she had fun staring at her hand. The weather was perfect and it wasn't too crowded.
The beach was gorgeous but freaked me out because I'm scared of all the things. (Ex: Bronson getting too close to the busy road right by the beach, Bronson getting too close to the waves and being sucked away; writing out my fears is not therapeutic. Stopping now.) But the water was bluer than blue and the sand was ready to be castled.

We visited: The harbor seals!!! I lost my voice yelling things like, "Loose seal!" and "Bronson! Look at the seals!!! They're so cute! BUT DON'T GET TOO CLOSE!!!"

Yep, just a nice relaxing day with the fam.
